Summary of Knowledge Required for the Small Appliance Examination
Requirements for Refrigerant Recovery:
- Know the EPA’s definition of a “small appliance” in regards to air-conditioning and refrigeration.
- Know the refrigerant evacuation requirements for small appliances using recovery equipment manufactured before November 15 1993, with and without a working compressor.
- Know the refrigerant evacuation requirements for small appliances using recovery equipment manufactured after November 15 1993, with and without a working compressor.
Refrigerant Recovery Practices:
- Know how to identify refrigerants and detect noncondensables within refrigerants by taking pressure and temperature readings.
- Know the methods used to recover refrigerants from small appliances that have broken compressors.
- Knowledge that you need to install access valves on both the high-side and low-side when recovering refrigerants from small appliances that have broken compressors.
- Knowledge that you need to run the compressor when recovering refrigerants using system-dependent or “passive” recovery devices.
- Knowledge that you should remove solderless access fittings when you are done servicing appliances.
- Knowledge of substituting R-134a which is a HFC (hydrofluorocarbon), for R-12 which is a CFC (clorofluorocarbon).
Refrigerant Safety:
- Know about the decomposition products of refrigerants at high temperatures.
