The National Electrical Code® (NEC) is the electrical installation safety standard publication most commonly consulted, referenced, and utilized by electricians, inspectors, engineers, and designers nationwide. It is published by the National Fire Protection Agency and is officially know as NFPA 70. It is adopted in all 50 states. Adoption means that it is a lawful regulation in the states and needs to be adhered to in the interest of protecting people and property from injury and damage.

NT Commentary…
The NEC is revised, amended, and updated every three years. In most regions of the nation, electrician’s license renewals also cycle every three years and most of the required continuing educational credits for license renewal are based upon knowledge of the updates within the NEC.
As a licensed electrician or electrical contractor it is important to keep updated with knowledge of the code not only for the life safety of your customers and protection of their equipment and property, but also that it does not cost you added expense because the authority having jurisdiction mandates you to comply with a code change that you had no knowledge of and did not factor into your job quote. I tell you this from personal experience.
If you are an electrical apprentice make sure you get a copy of the NEC as soon as possible and become familiar with it. Knowledge of the code is what the most of your licensing and certification testing will be based upon. True dat it ain’t the best reading in the world but knowing the arrangement of the code book, what each of the chapter subjects are, where and what the tables are, how to cross-reference subjects, and the general mechanics of how the NEC is laid out will get you some great mileage on examination day.
