About NEC Article 100 Definitions Quiz
The Coffee-Break Code Quiz Series is all about learning the National Electrical Code conveniently in small doses. Short quizzes enable you to take in some study time during coffee/lunch breaks or in between jobs/classes. Treat it as a trivia game and discuss it with other electricians, apprentices, or students in your company or school. See who has the knowledge and see who does not.
In whatever way you use these quizzes, NationalTradesman.com renders great on mobile devices as well as desktops and laptops and you can call up a quiz at your convenience, bookmark it, and make progress in learning the NEC. Please feel free to share this quiz with others individually, or on forums and social media. Thanks.
- This quiz through repetition by design helps you learn the definitions contained in Article 100. It contains only 10 questions generated from a bank of 121 questions. Quick and painless.
- Each time you take the quiz, questions are shuffled and 10 are picked randomly from the bank. The more often you take it the more questions you will be exposed to and the more you will learn the definitions within the National Electrical Code. And you will learn them.
- Pressing the submit button immediately returns your score along with the test questions and correct answer information for those questions you answered wrong. The test results are a very useful study tool.

#1. Which is “An enclosure that is designed for either surface mounting or flush mounting and is provided with a frame, mat, or trim in which a swinging door or doors are or can be hung.” ?
CORRECT ANSWER INFO:
Correct answer is D: Cabinet
NEC DEFINITION:
Cabinet: An enclosure that is designed for either surface mounting or flush mounting and is provided with a frame, mat, or trim in which a swinging door or doors are or can be hung.
(Article 100 Definitions; Part I General)
#2. Which of the following terms is defined as “Apparatus in which the circuits are not necessarily nonincendive themselves but that affect the energy in nonincendive field wiring circuits and are relied upon to maintain nonincendive energy levels.” ?
CORRECT ANSWER INFO:
Correct answer is B: Associated Nonincendive Field Wiring Apparatus
NEC DEFINITION:
Associated Nonincendive Field Wiring Apparatus: Apparatus in which the circuits are not necessarily nonincendive themselves but that affect the energy in nonincendive field wiring circuits and are relied upon to maintain nonincendive energy levels.
(Article 100 Definitions; Part I General)
#3. A “Charge Controller” is defined as
CORRECT ANSWER INFO:
Correct answer is C: equipment that controls DC voltage or DC current, or both, and that is used to charge a battery or other energy storage device.
NEC DEFINITION:
Charge Controller: Equipment that controls DC voltage or DC current, or both, and that is used to charge a battery or other energy storage device.
(Article 100 Definitions; Part I General)
#4. In hazardous (classified) locations, separate intrinsically safe circuits are sometimes placed together with other intrinsically safe apparatus and associated apparatus. These systems are called
CORRECT ANSWER INFO:
Correct answer is C: intrinsically safe systems
NEC DEFINITION:
Intrinsically Safe Systems: An assembly of interconnected intrinsically safe apparatus, associated apparatus, and interconnecting cables, in that those parts of the system that may be used in hazardous (classified) locations are intrinsically safe circuits.
Informational Note: An intrinsically safe system may include more than one intrinsically safe circuit.
(Article 100 Definitions: Part I General)
NT COMMENTARY:
“Intrinsicaly safe” is a design term used to indicate a high degree of safety in regards to electric equipment, apparatus or circuitry ability to producing an arc or generate heat that would ignite a flame. This is necessary in many hazardous locations with combustible atmospheres.
Lets not confuse equipment listed as intrinsically safe with equipment listed as explosionproof. Just because a piece of equipment may be designated as intrinsically safe does not mean it is safely capable of withstanding an explosion from within the equipment and protecting personnel in vicinity of that equipment.
#5. If a piece of equipment is located so that it is not readily accessible to persons unless special means for access are used, it is said to be
CORRECT ANSWER INFO:
Correct answer is D: isolated
NEC DEFINITION:
Isolated (as applied to location): Not readily accessible to persons unless special means are used.
(Article 100 Definitions: Part I General)
#6. According to the NEC, which of the following defines a Combustible Gas Detection System [as applied to Hazardous (Classified) Locations]?
CORRECT ANSWER INFO:
Correct answer is A:. A protection technique utilizing stationary gas detectors in industrial establishments.
NEC DEFINITION:
Combustible Gas Detection System [as applied to Hazardous (Classified) Locations] A protection technique utilizing stationary gas detectors in industrial establishments.
(Article 100 Definitions: Part 1 General)
#7. Which of the following defines an industrial control panel in the NEC?
CORRECT ANSWER INFO:
Correct answer is D: Any of the above
NEC DEFINITION:
Industrial Control Panel: An assembly of two or more components consisting of one of the following: (1) Power circuit components only, such as motor controllers, overload relays, fused disconnect switches, and circuit breakers. (2) Control circuit components only, such as pushbuttons, pilot lights, selector switches, timers, switches, and control relays. (3) A combination of power and control circuit components. These components, with associated wiring and terminals, are mounted on, or contained within, an enclosure or mounted on a subpanel.
The industrial control panel does not include the controlled equipment.
(Article 100 Definitions: Part I General)
#8. The definition of “Associated Apparatus” as it applies to Hazardous (Classified) Locations is
CORRECT ANSWER INFO:
Correct answer is A: apparatus in which the circuits are not necessarily intrinsically safe themselves but that affects the energy in the intrinsically safe circuits and is relied on to maintain intrinsic safety.
NEC DEFINITION:
Associated Apparatus” [as it applies to Hazardous (Classified) Locations]: Apparatus in which the circuits are not necessarily intrinsically safe themselves but that affects the energy in the intrinsically safe circuits and is relied on to maintain intrinsic safety.
(Article 100 Definitions; Part I General)
#9. The term “Ampacity” is defined in the NEC as
CORRECT ANSWER INFO:
Correct answer is A: the maximum current, in amperes, that a conductor can carry continuously under the conditions of use without exceeding its temperature rating.
NEC DEFINITION:
Ampacity: The maximum current, in amperes, that a conductor can carry continuously under the conditions of use without exceeding its temperature rating.
(Article 100 Definitions; Part I General)
#10. In the NEC a bare conductor is defined as
